What can you really say about this movie? It’s very standard Miike, and you get exactly what you expect: over the top characters, hyper energetic and hilarious comedy, all done with true craftsmanship. I’m not familiar with the source material, so I can’t say how true it stays to the manga, but it is certainly better than the Ace Attorney adaptation in terms of being stand alone movie. There is however a clear sense of Miike struggling to form a satisfying climax in the third act, which leads to a very unsatisfying conclusion. Part of it certainly is that the focus on the antagonist side is too heavily on the comedic relief bad guy that is a mere underling, while the real final boss feels more like an after thought. He has no charisma and when he gets taken down, you don’t really feel like much was achieved. Reiji’s romantic interest also felt a bit forced at times, she didn’t really seem to always fit to the plot seamlessly as one might have liked.
