The Lower Depths (1957)

It was pretty easy to pick up that this was based on a play with the way the majority of the movie takes place entirely inside the shack where the main cast lives.  Being adapted from play does explain why the beginning is so slow and make up a the glaring issue of how little plot there is. It is only after the first thirty minutes after the characters are all established and their interactions start to swell up that the movie finally becomes enjoyable. The jovial musical scene at the end, as well as the very abrupt ending  itself also goes a long way to redeem the entire movie.
