This is a bit of a hard nut to crack in terms of trying to put my thoughts on the movie into words. I really liked it, but I also had problems with it. As expected of Studio Ghibli, the animation is absolutely beautiful, and in certain key scenes, almost stunning. One scene that in particular comes to mind is when Kaguya runs off while throwing her multiple layer of clothing away. The main issue with the movie is the pacing. At times it was a bit stilted and felt too fragmented in its structure. The story didn’t feel to flow from scene to scene naturally, the jumps being a bit abrupt, which kept me wondering if these were entirely due to the somewhat troubled and extended production of the movie, and whether or not Ghibli just wanted to get the film done and released. After all, originally it was suppose to get released simultaneously with Ghibli’s other new film, the Wind Rises and then it… wasn’t. I also wonder if the film has any long lasting shelf life, or will it be one of those movies where you see it once and then rarely even think of it later. Well, time will tell.
