The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

With December under way, it’s finally appropriate to watch Christmas themed movies without it feeling incredibly weird. So, Muppet Christmas Carol. Talk about a surprisingly comfy watch. It doesn’t quite measure up to Muppet Treasure Island, but it gets incredibly close. The ghosts were very interesting visually, and the songs were not bad either. Overall, it felt like a very nice Muppet adaptation. I found it a bit troublesome at times that I kept having flashbacks to the Walt Disney version of Christmas Carol featuring Mickey and crew, as it was my earliest, and still is by far the strongest, point of reference to the story. But enough about that, I really liked how they used Gonzo as Charles Dickens who just follows Scrooge around with Rizzo, so he can narrate the story as it unfolds. Michael Caine’s Scrooge is a bit more elegant and nice than one would have expected but entire serviceable and fitting for the Muppet tone. In essence, it was quite good, and I’m very happy with the fact that it finally inspired me pick up the original story and start reading it now, just in time for Christmas.
